This is a beautiful antique Victorian jewellery box, dating to 1865/1870. It has all of its original Gothic-inspired decoration and a stunning newly refurbished interior.

The Exterior

This box is made of solid wood and has a beautiful black ebonised finish. There are very ornate Gothic-inspired embellishments to the lid, comprising of bone, brass and metal studs, plus a complementary large decorative escutcheon to the keyhole, also made from the same materials. There is beautiful engraving to the brasswork.

The box is complete with its original hinges which hold the lid upright. It also has its original lock. Please note that the lock is inoperative. A beautiful Victorian period 'dummy' key has been supplied for the lock and is for decorative purposes only.

The bottom of the box has a new black felt covering which will protect the surfaces of furniture.

The Gothic Inspired Decoration

This beautiful type of decoration on boxes became popular during the 'High Victorian Gothic' period which began in 1855. The Gothic revival itself began much earlier in the 1740s. This very ornate Gothic style was inspired by medieval English art.

The Black Ebonised Finish

The black ebonised finish on boxes (and indeed all things black) became the height of Victorian fashion, following the death of Queen Victoria's beloved husband, Albert. Victoria went into a very long mourning period, during which time she commissioned black mourning jewellery, garments, beakers and furniture etc. Such items were subsequently copied and became immensely popular with the general public.

The Interior

The interior has been fully refurbished by our very skilled box restorer. It has stunning deep purple padded satin panels to the base of the compartment and to the inside of the lid. These are framed by gold silk cord trim which contrasts beautifully against the purple satin. The walls of the compartment have purple satin linings and the walls inside the lid have beautiful silver foil linings. The satin is beautifully reflected in these. The padded panels provide cushioned protection for jewellery. All of this refurbishment has given the interior an extremely luxurious look and feel!

History Of This Box

This box started life as a very expensive Victorian ladies glove box and is a wonderful piece of social history. Its stunning refurbishment has now converted it into a very beautiful and functional jewellery box.
