This is a beautifully decorated Japanese jewellery box with a stylish piano shaped form. It dates to the 1950s.

The Exterior

The box has a glossy black lacquered finish and is decorated with beautiful hand-painted Japanese landscape scenes. These scenes include Mount Fuji, temples, trees, sailing boats and other motifs.

The scene on the lid is surrounded by a beautiful frame of inlaid Abalone shell and this also decorates the 'keys' section of the piano. The shell is colourful and has a beautiful iridescent shine.

There is a pretty engraved metal escutcheon to the keyhole. Please note there is no key.

The box stands tall on three beautifully shaped legs.

The box is complete with its original hinges. The bottom is stamped 'Hand Painted, DAYSUN, FOREIGN'.

The Interior

The interior has a compartment at the top. This raises up on its own accord as you open the lid of the box. It is attached to quality cantilever hinges which allow this automatic lift-up mechanism.

There is a further compartment beneath the raised one, and the musical movement is concealed beneath a black lacquered ledge to the right of this. Both the top compartment and ledge have a black lacquered finished and hand-painted scenes, in keeping with that on the box's exterior.

The inside of the lid has a fitted mirror.

Both compartments plus the inside of the lid have their original burnt orange ribbed cord linings.

The Musical Movement

The movement plays the beautiful tune 'Fur Elise'.

Operating The Movement

Six turns of the key are sufficient to wind up the musical movement. The music stops as it should, when the lid is closed or when the movement has fully unwound.

Notes On Vintage Musical Movements and Locks

As with all musical boxes, care should be taken not to overwind the movement. Over winding will result in the movement malfunctioning.

Vintage movements are already old and will naturally have some wear from age and use. They may occasionally deteriorate or malfunction over time.

We are not responsible for movements that may deteriorate/malfunction from further age and use once a box is purchased. Neither are we responsible for movements that malfunction from overwinding.

Please check the movement as soon as you receive your box. It will be checked again prior to posting.

Please read our returns policy which includes our policy on musical movements.
