Beautiful antique Portuguese box dating to around 1890. Made of solid Rosewood and decorated with silver metal embellishments. Original silk linings to the interior.

This is a beautiful antique box, made of solid Rosewood and adorned with silver metal embellishments. It dates to around 1890 and was made in Portugal. The box has its original silk lined interior.
The Exterior
This box is made of a variety of solid Rosewood which has a rich deep colour.
There are beautiful silver metal embellishments to the lid, including four corner pieces and two straight garlands. The embellishments are in the form of three dimensional high relief Roses. These were created by a repousse technique, whereby the silver is hammered out from the underside.
LENCOS, the Portuguese word for handkerchiefs, is in silver metal fancy capital script, across the centre of the lid. The lettering is decorated with beautiful raised flowers. The box was originally made for handkerchiefs but its beautiful silk linings make it suitable for jewellery storage.
The edges of the lid, as well as the body and base of the box, have beautiful carved decoration.
The box has a wooden hinged opening and it stands slightly raised on square wooden feet.
The Interior
The interior has its original blue silk linings and ivory silk twisted cord trim. The silk to the inside of the lid and sides of the compartment is beautifully pleated. The silk panel to the base of the compartment is padded. This will provide cushioned protection for jewellery.
The mirror to the inside of the lid is new. This has replaced the original damaged mirror.
Condition
This box is still in very good condition, despite its 130 years of age. It has sound structure and no nasty cracks. There are a few faded patches to the Rosewood, just on the lid.
All of the silver metal embellishments are present and securely fitted. These have been polished but still retain some of their naturally built-up tarnish.
There is some minor wear to the interior silk linings.
