1930s Walnut Art Deco Musical Trinket Jewellery Box

This is a beautiful Art Deco musical trinket or jewellery box. It is likely a 'one off' handmade box; its construction not fitting that of a mass produced/machine made box.

The Exterior

The box has beautiful walnut veneer which has lovely figuration and a rich warm colour. Its lid is narrower than the body, creating a stylish stepped design.

The box is complete with its original hinges and pretty engraved clasp.

The Interior

The interior is also finished with Walnut veneer. It has two compartments with stylished curved bases, and the musical movement is cased in the centre of these. The box's original ballerina stands between the two compartments. The ledge of the casing can be removed should the musical movement ever require attention.

There is a beautiful design to the inside of the lid. This features a temple shaped cut out section to the centre, behind which three mirror panels are fitted. The outer mirrors have a beautiful angled position and the ballerina therefore reflects in all three mirrors. There are also temple shapes carved out of the wood on either side of the centre section.

The Musical Movement

The movement is in perfect working order, playing the tune at its correct tempo. We haven't been able to decipher its title.

Operating The Musical Movement

The movement is operated via the winding key on the bottom of the box. Three turns of the key are sufficient to fully wind up the movement. The music stops as it should, when the lid is closed or when the movement has fully unwound.

Notes On Vintage Musical Movements

As with all musical boxes, care should be taken not to overwind the movement. Over winding will result in the movement malfunctioning.

Vintage movements are already old and will naturally have some wear from age and use. They may occasionally deteriorate or malfunction over time.

We are not responsible for movements that may deteriorate/malfunction from further age and use once a box is purchased. Neither are we responsible for movements that malfunction from overwinding.

Please check the movement and lock as you receive your box. It will be checked again prior to posting.

Please read our returns policy which includes our policy on musical movements and locks.

Condition

This wonderful unique box is in very good condition for its 90 or so years of age. It is structurally sound and has very little wear despite its great age.

The hinges are still in good working order and the clasp securely closes the lid.

The mirrors are still securely fitted and have no chips or cracks. They have a little foxing which we'd expect from their age.

The ballerina is missing part of her right arm.
